What
is Opus Dei?
Opus Dei is a mobilization of people from all walks of
life who want to pursue holiness in and through their
ordinary activities. It was founded by St. Josemaria and
represents his life’s work. In its activities Opus
Dei resembles a support group for pursuing holiness in
the secular world: they sponsor classes about faith and
doctrine, offer retreats, and members hold small informal
gatherings in their homes or at the homes of their friends
to talk about how to pursue holiness. www.opusdei.org
What
is a personal prelature?
A Personal Prelature is the canonical status of Opus Dei
in the Church. Vatican II made the formation of Personal
Prelatures possible and in 1982 John Paul II made Opus
Dei the first Personal Prelature. For more information
visit www.opusdei.org
What
is a Plan of Life?
St. Josemaria used the phrase “Plan of Life”
to refer to the schedule that an individual makes
for incorporating vocal and mental prayer into his
or her life. St. Josemaria knew that lay people have
very busy lives, especially parents. For that reason
he encouraged people to make time to speak with God,
lest this very important activity be put aside.
Do
I have to join Opus Dei to practice the spirituality of
St. Josemaria?
No. To join Opus Dei a person must have what they believe
to be a specific calling to Opus Dei. There are many people
around the world who do not have a specific vocation to
Opus Dei but who still live St. Josemaria’s Spirituality
to varying degrees and benefit greatly from his teachings.
Some of these people are cooperators of Opus Dei, people
who partake in Opus Dei activities but are not members.
How
do I find out about evenings of recollection in my area?
Evenings of recollection are sponsored by Opus Dei and
held in parishes around the world. To find an evening
of recollection near you contact info@opusdei.org
How
do I find a spiritual director?
A spiritual director should be someone you trust who has
a close relationship with God and a good deal of formation
in the Christian Faith. Many Catholics choose priests
as spiritual directors and combine spiritual direction
with the sacrament of Reconciliation. However many Religious
and lay people make excellent spiritual “coaches.”
How
do I determine my vocation in life?
God calls all people to be close to Him and he calls each
person individually along a unique path to grow close
to Him. Some are called to be priest, others religious,
others to marriage or the single life. Determining what
path God wishes us to take is a lifelong process that
requires continual prayer. A good spiritual director can
be invaluable in helping an individual discern his or
her vocation.

What is the relationship
of the St. Josemaria Institute and Opus Dei?
St. Josemaria was the
founder of Opus Dei. His teachings are the basis of the
mission of the St. Josemaria Institute. As such, the messages
of the two organizations are intertwined. However, the
St. Josemaria Institute hopes to promote St. Josemaria’s
valuable teachings to the general public regardless of
people’s relationship to Opus Dei. When someone
